80s Summer Camp Challenge - Day 1 - Sleepaway Camp

I’ve heard a lot of hype around the 80s cult classic, Sleepaway Camp, but I never took the time to see it. It has been called a “low budget gem”,”genre bending” and “better than Friday the 13th.” The aspect that got my attention was it’s "infamous twist ending.’ So, is Sleepaway Camp worth a watch?

Firstly, I will praise Sleepaway Camp for it’s daring casting. This 80s movie has a real cast of teenagers. Yes, not 30 year olds who act like teens. The reactions are genuine, but the acting is horrible. When I say horrible, I mean HORRIBLE. It was not even bearable to watch at some points. I still applaud Robert Hiltzik, the director of Sleepaway Camp, for his effort.

Secondly, the deaths were so thought out and original. I have not seen these deaths before or presently. Even if they were not gory, I again applaud the director for it’s effort and originality

Thridly, the ending is definitely what makes the whole movie. If you can survive the horrendous acting, the bloodless scenes and the awful camera work, your in for a treat! I won’t say more.

To conclude, If you are a horror fan, I say watch this for the infamous ending and the creative deaths. If you put those aside, you just have a low budget cliché 80s slasher.

2014 Review: The Quiet Ones

Hammer Films have given us yet another retro horror movie. After the success of The Woman In Black, I knew they would surely do another film. This time around we have a mental patient and supernatural mojo. While you may think not another one, The Quiet Ones delivers on one thing and one thing only, scares.

This movie sure got a lot of aspects wrong like the plot, the boring characters and the originality. The most disappointing one would have to be the special effects. They looked cheaply made and not well thought out. Horror movies needs some awesome special effects, but with the technology growing, horror directors are using the easy way out, CGI.

While it can sound disappointing, fear not because the scares were well thought out and nicely made. They were simple, but were very effective.

Despite all the flaws, I would recommend this movie to horror cravers and also for people who wants to have a great time with friends.

2014 Review: Devil’s Due

After seeing the trailer, I was frustrated! Why make another found footage film? I mean we have a lot of those! Paranormal Activity is popular because it was a fresh start to something Blair Witch Project did. But now I swear if there’s one more found footage movie about ghosts, I may pull my hair out! I went in the theatres with low expectations and I was still let down. I went for the late show and I almost fell asleep. There was nothing happening, a lot of clichés and it was just down right boring. My friends were bored enough to walk out of the theatres. I should’ve followed them, because the ending was just like Paranormal Activity. Please! Do yourself a favour and don’t waste money on this shitty movie! The only thing cool about this movie was it’s controversial posters and promotional campaigns. One of the campaign was changing for religious views on Facebook to Satanism. If you do that you receive a 16 seconds sneak peak. You can see all the details here: http://www.fearnet.com/news/news-article/controversial-devils-due-promotional-campaign-invites-you-convert-satanism

Bates Motel Season 2 Gets A Premiere Date

At first, I thought why in the hell would you need a Psycho prequel? I mean Psycho is the master of horror movies. Doing a prequel to this classic horror movie could be a huge miss. To my surprise, Bates Motel Season 1 was a beautifully acted TV show. There are many flaws, but the acting is where it’s shines. The chemistry between Vera Farmiga (Norma Bates) and Freddie Highmore (Norman Bates) is incredible! There are some really good supporting actors too from Max Thieriot & Olivia Cooke. You should definataly check out the first season. I really think there honouring Psycho.

Season 2 will premiere March 3rd, 2014 and I can’t wait to see it. I’m a huge Vera Farmiga fan, so I was really excited when she signed for Bates Motel and The Conjuring. Season 1 left us with a lot of oppurtunity and I will be tuning in on March 3rd.

Worst Horror Movies of 2013

2013 was in, my opinion, a good year for horror movies, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t some bad ones! I had the “pleasure” to watch 3 bad horror movies in theatres this year and the other 2 I saw them in my October Horror Movie Challenge. Let’s get in my top 5 worst horror movies…

5- The Purge

This movie was a great concept executed badly. I mean when I first saw the synopsis I thought it was original and fun. I was wrong! I was going in theatres with high hopes and left in disappointment. They put some useless twists and practically no scares. But at the end of the day, we know this movie is bad, and at least I had a night out with friends….at least! [IMDb- 5.5] [RT- 38%]

4- The Curse of Chucky

If the Curse of Chucky would’ve give an end to the Chucky series, I would’ve liked it for that! But again another pointless sequel that really had nothing to give. Instead, it try to expand some aspects in the original, but what they don’t want to understand is that no. one. cares. All in all, it’s a stupid and pointless sequel. [IMDb- 5.6] [RT- 79%]

image

3- All the Boys Love Mandy Lane

Don’t watch this! It’s predictable. There’s A LOT of horror clichés here! I would say a mix between Scream and Friday the 13th! This movie doesn’t bring anything new to the horror genre. We have really no storyline and like all pointless horror movies there’s a lot of sex scenes. It’s all been done and this is why it’s #3. [IMDb- 5.6] [RT- 41%]

2- Texas Chainsaw 3D

Why do you have to make another Texas Chainsaw remake! WHY! We already have that other piece of shit remake with Jessica Biel. We don’t need another one! I knew it was gonna be horrible, but I didn’t think it was gonna this bad. I went to see it in theatres and *SPOILER ALERT* when the main character was actually Leatherface’s sister, I was done! If I could’ve pick two movies for number one this would’ve been one of them, but there’s another movie that was so bad that I actually wanted to leave the theatres and that is number 1. [IMDb- 4.8] [RT- 19%]

1- The Last Exorcism: Part 2

I think paranormal movies are kinda worn out. This movie was so boring I wanted my money back. I was in the theatres and let me tell you it was empty. I was with my friends and my friends were bored. I wanted to stab the movie each time I was a cliché. This movie is so bad and so pointless that it should be burned. [IMDb- 3.9] [RT- 16%]

Best Horror Movies of 2013

Let’s remember the all the horror movies we watched in 2013. Some were bad, but some were good. I find that 2013 was a year with amazing horror movies, do you agree? I saw a lot of horror movies this year in theatres and each time I was blown away! Now enough of that and let’s get in my top 10 best horror movies of 2013.

10- V/H/S 2

When me and my friends watched the first one, they were really scared! I remember when they would even go home because they were too scared! When I watched the second one, I thought it was just as good as the first one. It had great, creepy stories just like the first one. Although I really liked it, i’m just feel that paranormal movies are too overplayed. [IMDb - 6.1] [RT - 72%]

9- Escape From Tomorrow

This movie received a lot of hype at The Sundance Festival. It was filmed at Disneyland secretly and someway got in theatres. When I watched this, I had a what the f*** face. Pedofiles, monsters, ghosts, psychopaths all at Disneyland. It sort of wipes away the happiness of Disney. It’s original and I love it! [IMDb- 5.5] [RT- 56%]

8- Carrie

I know a lot of people were disappointed with Carrie, but personally I enjoyed it. I really dislike the original Carrie and I don’t know why. I just think it’s boring. I know it wasn’t perfect, the ending really sucked. It had too much CGI and just was really badly made. What I adore was the mother daughter scenes. It was creepy and dark, so better than the original. [IMDb- 6.3] [RT- 49%]

7- Would You Rather

After watching a lot of really bad horror movies, I found this gem. I’m a sucker for psychological horror where you have a certain number of people trapped in a room. The only complaint I have is that there was a bit too much gore and not enough of the characters’ backgrounds. Maybe, I just liked it because I was just so use to seeing bad horror movies. Either way I loved it! [IMDb- 5.8] [RT- 55%]

6- Mama

This movie is another paranormal movie. I know i’m tired of those movie, but I really like it. I thought it had some really nice old school scares and a decent plot! The reason that this really high on the list is that Jessica Chastain was amazing in her role! The problem with it was that “Mama” wasn’t scary. She was just a complete CGI mess. But I think it was somewhat original and wonderfully acted. [IMDb- 6.3] [RT- 66%]

5- You’re Next

In Canada, this was released in 2013. I know in some countries in was released in 2012. Either i’m from Canada so You’re Next is a 2013 movie and a really great one. Go in without knowing anything and it won’t disappoint! With great twists and greater script, You’re Next is a great movie when half of the cast is killed. [IMDb- 6.8] [RT- 75%]

4- Maniac

This movie is film in first person point of view. This makes you feel like your actually the killer himself. It has some super great graphics and awesome camera work. Although I have not seen the original and know nothing about it, I can say that this is a good remake! The director took psychological horror to a whole new level and that’s why I love this so much. This is probably the smartest horror movie of 2013! [IMDb- 6.2] [RT- 47%]

3- Evil Dead

Another awesome remake! If Sam Raimi had the technology we had today his movie would probably resemble the Evil Dead remake. They followed the original story and put the gore of the original. The only thing I didn’t really like was that the original had some black humor. The remake didn’t have that. They stuck on the gore. All in all, a really awesome remake that gives honor to the original. [IMDb- 6.5] [RT- 62%]

2- Insidious: Chapter 2

This is a debatable movie. It got some mix reviews and it divided a lot of people. Personally, I found this was a really great sequel. It got back to the original and added some elements which worked well. This probably where people hated it. Insidious Chapter 2 changed the original. Some people hated that while some loved it. Usually, I’m a really tough critic, but I fell in love with Insidous Chapter 2. [IMDb- 6.7] [RT- 37%]

1- The Conjuring

You knew this was number one! Everyone who has seen it should’ve automatically said this is 2013’s number one horror movie. James Wong really hit this one out of the park. The movie was set in the 80’s and felt like an 80s movie. It had old school scares that actually scared me. Some nice handmade gore. And it didn’t had a lot of CJ (thank you God). This movie felt like Halloween or A Nightmare On Elm Street. It had those perfect moments and really nice set up! This is like a guide sheet for futur horror movies. [IMDb- 7.6] [RT- 86%]

OHMC2013: The Exorcist (1973)

"[Regan, possessed, is masturbating with a crucifix] Let Jesus fuck you, let Jesus fuck you. Let him fuck you." - Demon

The Exorcist is probably one of the most controversial horror movie on the planet! It was shocking, disturbing and plain creepy. In these days you seen a lot more shocking stuff in the news. But I still find this movie so creepy and well done. William Peter Blatty did know how to break some rules.

The Exorcist is still a much loved horror movie. Which is still shocking in the present day.

Running Time: 122 min

Total Deaths: 1

Best Performance: Linda Blair

Rating: 89%

OHMC2013: Candyman 2: Farewell to the Flesh (1994)

"Swallow your horror and let it nourish you. Come with me and sing the song of misery. Share my world!" - Candyman

The only thing I loved about this movie was Candyman’s back story! It was an awful, boring and non scary movie. I loved how you get to know more about what happened to Candyman and his story. I think i’ll just leave it at that.

Candyman’s back story was the only highlight of the story.

Running Time: 93 min

Total Deaths: unknown

Best Performance: Tony Todd
